NURS 6053 Assignment: Personal Leadership Philosophies Essay
Assignment: Personal Leadership Philosophies Essay
Leadership is an important trait that determines our ability to influence others. Individuals are born leaders or develop the desired leadership knowledge and skills by interacting with others. Irrespective of the type, leadership is important in helping individuals influence the actions and behaviors of others in the society. Therefore, this paper explores my leadership values, mission, vision, and areas of leadership that I need to improve to become a competent leader.
As a leader, my core values include honesty, justice, transparency, responsibility, and making a difference among those I lead. As a leader, I believe in honesty. I believe in telling someone the truth rather than lying to impress them. Honesty has helped me in learning the character traits and behaviors of those I interact with on a daily basis. I also believe that everyone in the society deserves justice. The human rights of others should always be respected and protected irrespective of their backgrounds. Humanity should be the basis in which we decide and take our actions. I also believe in ensuring transparency in everything I do. This is important in ensuring that I build trust and mutual relationships with those I meet (Knights, Grant & Young, 2018). I also know that it is through transparency that I will be a responsible person. Through these values, I aim at making a difference in those I lead. I believe that being a good leader extends beyond influencing others in a given manner. It also entails ensuring that one adopts behaviors that are beneficial to them and others in their societies.

My personal mission statement is to use my leadership abilities to transform and empower those I lead or interact with on a regular basis. My vision statement is to help others achieve their potentials irrespective of their situations. I achieve my mission and vision statements by working actively with those I lead. I strive towards understanding their diverse capabilities and ways of enhancing them further. I also instill in them a sense of urgency as a way of ensuring that they realize the optimum benefits of their potentials (Marques & Dhiman, 2017). Through these activities, I fulfill my mission and vision statement with ease.
There are many leadership styles considered to be effective for leaders. These include the Authentic Leadership Model, Transformational Leadership, Democratic Leadership, Leadership Challenge Model, etc. No matter what model a leader follows, it must be authentic and have certain qualities to be an effective leader. These include effective communication and relationship-building, knowledge of the healthcare environment, leadership, professionalism, business skills, reliability, compassion, believability, and transparency (Broome & Marshall, 2021). There are many nurses who have leadership attributes and lead without a title. They are considered nurse leaders as well and can be found at all levels of the healthcare system (James Cook University, 2021).
Another important consideration in effective leadership in today’s multigenerational workforce is how different generations respond to different leadership styles. For instance, Baby boomers are hard workers, and they enjoy achievement and feel accomplished at work. They are confident, independent, disciplined, and generally optimistic. Generation X prefers independence and does not respond well to controlling leadership styles. They want to work in collaboration with their leader. Generation Y are team-oriented and wants to feel respected by their boss to make decisions. They do not have the same hierarchical attitudes as other generations and do not like structure. They want to “connect†with their boss on a more personal level. Generation Z are financially focused, are entrepreneurial, and speak their mind, expecting change and transformation in their lives and at work. This generation prefers a coaching style (James Cook University, 2021).
Different personalities and different situations affect the work environment dynamically. The key to managing different generations is to alter leadership styles when necessary. We know that leader’s behaviors and leadership qualities have a significant impact on an organization’s overall success (Yang & Wei, 2018). We also know that the organization’s culture has a significant effect on leadership and the health of the workplace and ultimately the organization’s overall success. The trick is finding the balance.

Therefore, it is important that I work towards improving on my areas of weaknesses to become an effective leader
Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. The leadership of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches.
What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. While formal theories on leadership continue to evolve over time, great leaders seem to adhere to an overarching philosophy that steers their actions.

A description of your core values
A personal mission/vision statement
An analysis of your CliftonStrengths Assessment summarizing the results of your profile
I am a maximizer and have positivity. I need to work on being an arranger and discipline
A description of two key behaviors that you wish to strengthen
A development plan that explains how you plan to improve upon the two key behaviors you selected and an explanation of how you plan to achieve your personal vision. Be specific and provide examples.
The core values of a leader are what determine the personal leadership philosophy of a leader. I believe that good leaders tend to have a set of unique characteristics that drive the way they act, their decision-making process, and the level of influence that they have on their followers (Laureate Education 2014). Therefore, my personal leadership philosophy is driven by a set of values that determine my underlying beliefs and guide my decision-making process and the actions that ultimately shape my daily routine and my career goals (Cortellazzo et al., 2019). Notably, one of the values that drives my personal leadership philosophy is the elements of empowerment and development.
I view leadership as a position of power. For this reason, as opposed to keeping the power and control to myself, I strive to ensure that I empower others and motivate them to amplify their own impact as well. Some of the strategies that I use to ensure empowerment include actions such as formal training of employees through mentorship and delegation of responsibilities. Another key value in my personal leadership philosophy is the element of communication. I believe that communication is a powerful tool of a leader and is the foundation for a relationship. In the work setting, centering communication enables communication of contexts to the team and fellow employees (Khan et al., 2020). It aids in ensuring that clear and concise expectations are set for the employees. In addition, it forms the basis for the provision and setting of constructive feedback both within and outside the work setting.
The mission and vision are the core elements of my leadership values. My personal leadership mission statement defines my purpose and objectives as a leader. It aids in illustrating my role and existence to my followers and to the organization. Similarly, my mission statement defines my purpose as a leader. The vision statement focus on my personal goals and aspirations as a leader (Roupnel et al., 2019). The vision and the mission statements are meant to ensure that my leadership approach remains uplifting and inspiring. My personal vision and mission statement are:
Vision: To continue working towards becoming the leader that I would wish to work for. I have to lead by being an example and integrating open communication while investing in my employees and followers. I will aid the organization in attaining its goals.
Mission: To serve as a leader by encouraging the development of innovative ideas and forward-thinking to ensure that my team can bring about technology solutions that will enhance and improve other people’s lives.
Based on the CliftonStrengths assessment, I tend to employ the qualities of restorative theme due to my ability to develop solutions to problems that arise. I strive to ensure that I refer to information sources and consult materials such as publications in order to overcome the challenges that I encounter both in the work setting and in my personal life. I am constantly in search of ways that would best make me a better person and a better leader. For this reason, I would wish that other people learn from me about the need to investigate a situation at hand. This means that it is in the best interest to learn from the failures and challenges experienced. Also, I tend to be a learner, given that I strive to acquire additional knowledge and skills from the daily experiences and interactions within and out of the work setting. I tend to persevere to the point where I acquire the skills and knowledge needed to attain a goal. I tend to look into the future and the best way to have the best outcome through present actions and decisions on the futuristic theme. The theme of connectedness manifests in the element of generosity that I show to people. I believe that this is the strategy that will aid in motivating and influencing other people to perform good deeds. Lastly, as a relator, I seek to form positive relationships with those that I interact with to get the best out of the interaction.
Two key behaviors that I intend to strengthen include the qualities of supportive and participative leadership. The two behaviors will best aid in ensuring that I lead by example and that I am able to provide the right guidance to my employees. The strategies that I plan to use to improve on these behaviors are through online tutorials and enrolling in classes that will aid in improving the two aspects. I will enroll in evening classes and attend training sessions in the health facility that I work for to improve on the two aspects of leadership. Upon completion of the classes for three months, I will have a certificate and will be able to exercise the two qualities with ease. Online training will be based on a wide variety of sources and the contributions from accomplished leaders in the health sector (Khan et al., 2020). Being participative as a leader is motivating to the other employees and improves the level of performance in the health organization.

Effective leadership style applied in the health care industry is essential in strengthening and integrating health care delivery. In the recent past, improved quality of services offered in healthcare institutions often depended on the input of the nurses. Effective leadership that cares about the well-being of nurses would provide nurses with the urge to raise the standards in health care delivery. Leaders with effective leadership skills can move the industry forward (Duggan et al., 2015). The purpose of this assignment is to reflect on the leadership philosophy that defines a good leader.
Description of Core Values
The achiever theme implies that I have a great deal of stamina and work hard to meet the expected satisfaction. This strength positively impacts creating a good working environment (Duggan et al., 2015). For instance, achievers are ready to make their working areas look neat and acquire new knowledge and skills to improve the outcome. People portraying this trait always use their common sense to solve problems that, if left, could cause a great challenge at work. Leaders portraying these traits have the power to help others learn to meet the expected goal.
Personal Mission and Vision Statement
I am an authentic leader because of the leadership tasks have been handling in the past. My personal leadership brand is that of an authentic leader who continually defines the need and direction of an organization. This leadership brand delights in assisting others to do the right thing. They are always innovative, a quality recognized via their ability to set direction and create creative ideas that inspire others. My vision statement is “To lead with others in mind.†This vision aligns with my leadership philosophy traits.
Analysis of your CliftonStrengths
The results show that I am an achiever, learner, responsible, analytical, and a believer. I am also a learner. This trait implies a great desire to learn new things that make me unique in my work and relationship with others. This trait also makes me constantly desire to learn and improve on the things that I find exciting (Stoker et al., 2019). This theme is significant in improving my relationship at the workplace as it gives me the time to learn other people’s behavior and find a common interest that would improve unity at work.
I am also responsible. This theme shows I am talented in taking psychological ownership of anything I say I will do. I am also committed to values such as loyalty and honesty. People with this personality are determined to be victorious. A leader in healthcare institutions needs such a theme as it allows them to support other employees in meeting the desired outcome (Subramony et al., 2018). They also feel afraid to fail and thus will ensure that everything supporting success is in place to ensure the desired outcome is met.
Analytical is another leadership philosophy that I possess. I am fond of looking for reasons and causes of the things around me. I am also fast in thinking about factors that affect my situation. These traits show that I am ready to adopt an option that would allow me to upgrade and improve my situation and relationship with the people around me at my working place. Lastly, I am a believer. This shows that I am talented in believing in unchanging core values. These values are evident when I define the purpose of my love (Mwesigwa et al., 2020). My talents drive me, and I can push my people to meet my expected standards.
Behaviors to Strengthen
I want to strengthen my analytical and believer themes. While these are part of my strengths, I need to do more on analyzing situations and believing in people to incorporate into my team. Some people might misuse my belief in them, and it would show that I did not have a better analysis of boarding such people.
How to Improve on the Two Behaviors
I will attend seminars on leadership skills that will improve my analytical skills n dealing with people. Besides, these seminars will act as the main source of skills for analyzing my workmates and workplaces to develop a measure that will allow me to meet my expected outcome (Mwesigwa et al., 2020). I will also take short courses on leadership to strengthen these two traits.
Conclusion
Effective leadership involves creating a personal leadership development scheme. It entails the integration of individuals’ values, beliefs, and purpose in life. The development of leadership trains defines the integrity and social skills that one portrays to the people.
